Alcest is FAR closer to shoegaze/post rock than metal on all releases imo

I respect that opinion, I mean Souvenirs and Shelter aren't really metal at all and almost half the songs on here and Ecailles aren't that aggressive. I can't say I really go to this band when I need a metal fix.

sure, these guys are in the lighter side of the blackgaze spectrum but that's irrelevant

@boney i think you might actually enjoy the mantle by agalloch, it has more of a genuine metal feel than this but i don't think it's too harsh for you or anything

True. The Mantle is also one of the best albums ever made.

Yeah that album looks quite interesting Art, plus it looks like it has more of a genuinely dark feel instead of BLOOD FIRE MUTILATION SATAN GUTS DEATH

Boney there are way more sides to metal than that, you've got a long way to go my friend but the journey is a great one. Check The Mantle soon for sure, that'll set you on a good path.

Oh yeah I understand there's more to metal than that, I know I sound ignorant and that's because I am, it's just hard to get away from that image, which I admittedly find stupid and repulsive.

TBH I should like the idea of metal more than I do because I like fantasy and medieval stuff and obviously that's associated with a lot of metal.

I understand, and metal is great for that kind of imagery. This band, Agalloch, Opeth, early Ulver, Maudlin of the Well, and Dream Theater are all great bands for some out there lyrics relating to those themes, and others.

I usually tend to think of Alcest as a shoe gazing band first and foremost. But yea who cares, whatever the fuck they are I love to death.

Mongi I definitely hear that shoegaze influence, that's what had me interested in this in the first place, but this does sound a bit more metal than shoegaze to me since these aren't "pop" songs which (if I understand correctly) shoegaze fundamentally is. But I'm also a noob to shoegaze so what do I know.

Yeah Balls that was hyperbole/trying to push people's buttons a bit.

Let's all remember that I like country so my taste is as questionable as any metal fan's ;-]

Though there was once a time I hated the idea of country too, tastes can change.

Boney, these guys won't steer you wrong (mostly) if you want a light metal fix now and then. I prefer Ashes Against the Grain to the Mantle, but they are both recc'd for the same reason.

Ashes Against the Grain is world class metal, but The Mantle is one of my favorites ever so I prefer that one

Be sure to check out Alcest's Écailles de Lune, too!
