Is it just me, or does Jonas Renkse sound a lot like Nick Drake on the band's last few records?

"Love this band. Got to see them when they toured for this album, awesome show."
Personally, the tour in support of this album is the best I've seen Katatonia perform live and I've seen them twice prior. They've really become an awesome live band in the past few years.

Good to hear. I saw them like 10 years ago and it wasn't very engaging.
I thought it was simply the music and the band that was too introverted to be awesome live, but good if they've loosened up.

Anders has actually commented on their less energetic nature when performing live. I don't have the link, but it was something to the effect of them playing in a way that suits the music, which is to say they keep things fairly reserved on purpose.

I was too happy at the time to appreciate them.

"Takeover is top 5 Katatonia, easily"
I was going to call you crazy but I realized that my top 5 would definitely be made of songs off this and NItND only

It's on the Last Fair Day Gone Night DVD where he mentions it. There's more to their lack of energy live which they go into detail in the DVD but there's a little anecdote they touch upon briefly where in the words of Jonas, during the period between Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold Distance there was a point where Anders didn't want to do Katatonia anymore as a result of how much of a disaster Viva Emptiness was (not the album itself, but the recording and touring for it by all accounts was a nightmare) which might have given their lack of energy live in their mid period some context. Should mention that Anders was also the band's de facto manager at the time which burnt him out even more.

That documentary's quite the detailed oral history about the band's first 20 years as told by Jonas, Anders and Old Daniel (not to be confused w/the new Daniel). It's mostly a photo montage and it's quite long at 2 1/2 hours; maybe a bit tedious to sit through in one sitting (they recollect their history by year) but it's quite informative. I certainly wouldn't have known that Sounds Of Decay had to be recorded twice cause the band were hungover as hell during the first attempt. Old Daniel's bits are quite funny at times.

I really appreciate your summation. Some band docs are hard to get through.

Huh. Somehow I've managed to never hear these guys before. Looks like quite the backlog. Only 3 tracks into the new album and I'm loving the atmosphere so far.
Also, it's very rare for me to not cringe a little bit at most Swedish vocalists singing in English. Usually there's weird little inflections or pronunciations that sound cheesy/off. But this guy sounds great.

Holy crap. Usually when an album floats-by like this to me, I hate the album. But this is kinda hypnotizing. Really nice so far.

I said it before, but Jonas sounds a lot like Nick Drake on this album imo. And of course that's always a compliment as far as I'm concerned
