This is every bit as good as Images, absolutely on par. But just as KILL said production on here is perfect and the darker atmosphere slightly tips the scale to this one for me.

@kalkwiese
yeah it is, no wonder he sounds so bad right now, he never payed a lot of attention to correct technique or voice conservation.
Am I the only one who never really got into Images? The only songs I like is metropolis and pull me under of which I've already grown tired

His technique wasn't too bad tbf and he had a killer voice, but he had some technical issues and going into these extremes probably didn't help either. It's really a shame.
That's part of why I will never blame a singer for stopping doing extreme vocals (e.g. Serj Tankian, Mikael Ã…kerfeldt), because they're just really self responsible
Edit: I needed some time to get into I&W, but I really love it now. Surrounded, man. What a tune!

Under video with LaBrie's live fails there was this guy who claimed to be vocal teacher. There was a huge ass discussion about James'es voice so the guy created a Youtube channel (lol) to explain what did he mean and even started uploading regular videos about vocs. He also did 40min video breaking down what exactly went wrong during LaBrie's career. There it is:

Still a solid truth, the way he sounds on Awake is insane. I've tried singing Mirror so many times and it's a rarity I could reach all the notes without my voice breaking or changing into falsetto.
Don't have that much time this month to listen to music but I should probably try IAM again sometime, I'll give you that. It's been ages since I tried to sit down with all of the songs from it.

I know this videos too and you're right, if we take his definition of technique then JLB's technique was pretty shitty, haha. But he had some awesome control about his voice back then, that's what I meant

@Fowo: Great find, thanks for that. Also, the comments section for the downward spiral of James Labrie has some great insight from another vocal coach. Also imo Images is easily their best to jam it again.

@CalculatingInfinity
Actually it's the one I've been talking about, I forgot Ravenskill Rebel Militia uploaded 2 seperate videos (both fails and spiral). The video I linked above is the same guy from the comments.

Heck, I'll always have a soft spot for BC&SL (maybe not the lyrics though) and ADToE too.
