Production's not that bad. Hardly as polished as everyone says it is. It's clean, sure, but if anything it's a little thin and under-polished. As for the songwriting, well, if you hate it and think it's terrible, I can't really convince you otherwise, but it flows pretty well for me. This doesn't impact me as much as their original demo but those days are long gone, mostly because this style of metal isn't really for me anymore.

Agreed for the most part, especially the last line. Not sure I'm convinced about the songwriting yet though, still need a few more listens.

"Everything on here sounds so devoid of atmosphere or impact, it is all so extremely polished and sterile. The drumming sounds like shit, it sounds really odd in the mix like this wimpy little tittering. The songs feel so poorly slapped together they transition from one part to the next with such little meaning or poise, it is especially hard to care when everything feels so excessively bells and whistles for the sake of it rather than for any purpose whatsoever. "

Funeralopolis tells the hard truth. This is pretty much exactly how i feel about this.

This comments section is weird - an awful lot of negative responses (many of which are agreeable with) yet an average of 4.2.

Well, this has pretty obvious appeal - ambitious structures, significant intensity, 'experimental' fusion etcetc, so it's understandable that lots of people like it. However, it is also somewhat insipid, bland and soulless, so it's also understandable that lots of people hate it.

Plus the fanboying is strong with this band for some reason. Album is released and cops an immediate AOTY title from the legions? Yeah nah.

"The new demigods of prog-metal" - with such a summary on a (formerly) staff review that maintains a similar tone without, it is hardly surprising that impressionable listeners, among others, have placed the band on a pedestal.

"yet an average of 4.2."

*4.1

"It's crazy how far they've come in just two years considering how little known they were before that, having the demo up for free for about six years"

True, I have to admire them for that.

4.1 is slightly more appropriate for this album.

It's really good though, can't argue with that. I'm seldom in the mood for that kind of stuff recently, but it's good

Also, having actually read the review:
"In spite of drawing several comparisons to contemporary metal act Opeth, Ne Obliviscaris dig much deeper. They truly relish in the opportunity to blast the listener with heavy guitars, death growls and blast beats, but unlike many other modern death metal bands, Ne Obliviscaris throws classical violin and clean vocals into the mix."
I don't see how this qualifies them as 'digging deeper' than Opeth. Does the review mean that they transcend comparisons? If so, it is not phrased clearly.

I don't know why people who dislikes this band love to trash talk about who actually enjoys this release, using terms like "fanboy, impressionable listener, etc..."
