I was today years old when I learned that the songs "Oryx" and "Crake" are named after a 2003 novel called Oryx and Cake

Listen to the second disc of tomorrow in a year - it's their best album

Or you could just listen to both discs

Imo the long drawn out build up of tension and atmosphere is an essential aspect of what makes the massive pay offs on disc 2 so gratifying, would be a shame to just drop in on disc 2 on your first listen

Tomorrow, in a year is a lot different than silent shout, fair warning. I'd recommend giving it a little Google before listening, reading the wiki about it, its an interesting premise. It is very long and a significant portion of it is ambient / drone stuff but it also has some of their best/most substantial tracks later on. Its a demanding listen but very very worth the patience

I used to love disc 1 and I still do love some songs on it but it's not very accessible. Would def rec someone check out disc 2. I'm willing to bet a good # of people never get to experience colouring of pigeons or the title track due to giving up in disc 1

Anyone who would give up on disc one doesn't deserve coloring of pigeons or the title track tbqh

I remember hearing the album when I first got into edibles. Was a wild time playing it front to back. The payoff of colouring of pigeons is definitely very geatifying but I wouldn't say it's essential to loving colouring of pigeons. In fact I only got into these guys because Adam Downer sent me colouring of pigeons which got me to immediately go out and purchase the CD (which has different album art for some reason)

Its not essential to loving the song, it stands on its own, im just saying that release of tension makes it all the more gratifying and mind boggling. It's the right way to experience it for the first time at least.

Yeah true. It's like that caretaker album I reviewed. Way more satisfying to hear the slow degradation but most people prob won't opt for that route. I tried to get some feiends into tomorrow in a year and I'm pre sure 95% lf them noped out at variation of birds haha (prob one of my favourite songs ngl)
