not really sure. This and Let It Enfold You both captured a rather unique sound. I can think of older bands maybe with production not as good as this. Not sure what has production and tone that would rival this.

Their bayonet side project ep was basically a precursor for this of you haven't checked. It's only like ten minutes long but still jams.

Ah, good. I'm def glad to hear those were just b-sides or something cause they were pretty disappointing, almost like a regression in sound imo. I'm down with them goin back to their roots but those were ehh. And yeah I felt renacer was the "heavy" album we always wanted but if we could somehow get Still Searching esque cleans with buddy's better harsh vox these days, sign me up. Probably wishful thinking but still
And that is a tough one Calc

new album is somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4 for me. really positive album lyrically, occasionally overdone to its detriment tbh as it can come off as pretty corny in places. the title track is fucking breathtaking tho

the lyrics aren't always that positive lol. it deals with Buddy's doubts that he'll be able to be a good father, and the pain caused by the miscarriage his wife and him suffered through prior to having this child (which clearly still haunts him)
"I'm alive, but I'm dead inside and I'm supposed to aide a child with a smile now"
"I have never felt so crushed, the sadness buried in my bones. How the hell am I supposed to raise a daughter on my own?"

I listened to the new album probably 5 or 6 times yesterday, and it grew on me IMMENSELY. I would say the hooks aren't as immediate, but after a couple of goes they really start to stick.
Lyrically, I thought it was kind of weak at first but after reading the meaning behind some of the what he was saying, they really started to click. "First Breath, Last Breath" makes me want to fucking bawl my goddamned eyes out. Also interesting, it not only addresses his wife's miscarriage, but the fact that she almost didn't make it when they had their most recent child.
Some of his stuff is overblown as usual, but I can overlook it in the face of all the other great shit he says. He really is an amazing lyricist, and able to so accurately portray emotions and feelings that are generally either hard to describe, or indescribable altogether.

I honestly forgot how much I love this band. I think their last album was pretty underwhelming though, so makes sense
