I've been a big Isis fan ever since the release of their 2004 album, Panopticon. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too noisy, too abrasive. It was on Oceanic where Aaron Turder' presence became more apparent. I think Wavering Radiant was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Turder, Dude1 and Dude2. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of riffical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to So Did We. In this song, Aaron Turder addresses the problems of ripping off infinitely better bands in the genre. In Fiction is the most moving post-metal song of the 2000s, about true metal and sprawled out sublimenessy. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in black metal. Aaron Turder' solo career seems to be more introspective and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight (I Suck Dick) and Against All Odds (He Came On My Face). But I also think Aaron Turder works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

i'd go if they came to Vancouver but I still haven't listened to them enough to even decide if I like their music. I've listened to this album once and it's a lot to digest so I think it will be a while before I form an opinion on these guys, and even longer before I start tackling their massive discography.

but then I suppose I could pull a Lakes, dl it all tonight, listen to it all tonight/tomorrow, rate in all tomorrow, and be an instant Swans/post-punk-in-general master by thursday. hmm.

I saw them last year when they they played the Mercy Lounge in Nashville and it was pretty awesome. They're an excellent live band.

The band members climbed up on to the stage right beside me and Michael Gira used my shoulder for support. That was a pretty good fanboy moment.

Ugh, I still need to hear this. When you only get a day off every two weeks, it really limits your music time.
