Andcas hit the nail on the head- what turns me off from BTBAM most is their illogical songwriting. I would venture to say that Lunar Wilderness, Fossil Genera, Selkies, Ants of the Sky, and Swim to the Moon all suffer from unfortunately placed boring metalcore sections. This EP does seem to be a step in the right direction for me, as the heavy parts have gotten more interesting but they still too often feel the need to "be crazy" and decide to throw accordion breaks in between heavy sections

Specular Reflection is the only song I keep coming back to from this record. Damn near perfect song, compelling from start to finish. Sadly it can't support the entire EP.

People who say these guys suck always make me smile because there is never logic behind the attack. It's always just "they suck". Every member is immensely talented in both theory and technical proficiency. If something doesn't fall under your preferences (some people despise Tommy's vocals) that doesn't make it bad, it means you don't enjoy that style. Time signatures galore, lengthy songs with obscure story lines, perfect instrument levels, a variety of influences executed flawlessly. Simply put: If you thing "deyz sux", you're fucking jealous.
so basically more weird shit like time signature changes and key changes = better
you need to find a better way to rank music, my friend. :]

BTBAM's lyrics have always been pretty terrible, ha. There are plenty of exceptions, but this "story" isn't really pulling me in.

If anyone else can rank music based on "well that is just way too weird to be in this song" then I can rank it based on the complexity of the whole and how much it challenges my mind. Anyone can say any damn thing t7hey want, it won't change the fact that I enjoy the manner in which their songs are written. To me, it feels like instead of listening to one long song that doesn't seem to fluctuate to keep me wanting more I'm listening to several different songs within one track. This is how I've come to enjoy a lot of progressive metal and how I've come to write a lot of music of my own. I know there are some that agree with me and more that don't, but it won't change BTBAM's status as simply glorious in my eyes.

you can keep your complexity, i rate songs by emotional response and enjoyment. :]

Why in the world would you post in a music DISCUSSION, only to claim that you don't care what others think? There's absolutely nothing wrong with liking BTBAM, but your defensive tendencies are ridiculously unnecessary. Try listening to what others have to say; they can have valid points. I love Colors, but I love hearing why others don't enjoy it.

I almost feel like this was a pretty significant step down from The Great Misdirect.

TGM was missing something, I never really felt good about it.

fossil genera and disease injury madness were the only ones i liked off TGM. i liked all the ones off this ep

These songs feel more inconsistent. Songs like Mirrors, Obfuscation, Fossil Genera were 100% enjoyable for me, but this album just isn't the same.

Specular Reflection is better than any of the songs on TGM, I think. Each of the songs on TGM have something holding them back. I feel like that song, at least, is more of a return to their Alaska form: all killer, no filler. The other songs are still quite lacking.

I like Specular Reflection and Lunar Wilderness but Augment of Rebirth is so ugh.

Still not listening to this

They should've just cut out every part of Augment of Rebirth except for the barnyard thing. That is pure gold.

It's funny; that's exactly the opposite way I feel. I mean, TGM did have filler for sure, but it still felt enjoyable to me. Specular Reflection takes about 4-5 minutes for me to get interested, and then the band goes and has their greatest moment. The rest of the song is great. But those first 4-5 minutes...
