That's my favourite thing about In Utero. The songs just feel spontaneous, like they weren't rehearsed a million times and fussed about. It's just fucking energy exploding in different ways between 3 dudes who are perfectly in tune with each other.

Well to me the pinnacle moment of In Utero was when the rough met rehearsed. Pennyroyal Tea. Its an intense song, but still massively melodic and catchy.

the rehearsed side of things is amazing as well, and speaking of, Dumb in particular just slays me. That fucking song man...

That’s always been my most disliked song from In Utero and one of the worst Nirvana songs. It’s just so ‘tired’ in relation to the other stuff Nirvana churned out.

that's the point of the song. It's supposed to sound fed up and tired.

I’m talking about the formula, the structure of the thing. Formulaic ‘grunge’ but done with no tounge in cheek.

A lot of Nirvana stuff is tongue in cheek, but a lot of it is genuine heart-on-sleeve shit. The mixture of the two is what makes it engaging for me. The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts.

Dumb is certainly not one of my favorites but Kurt uses that basic syncopated rhythm like 15x over a couple albums. The lyrics are pretty affecting and do elevate it somewhat.

In Utero is a classic out and out noisey chaotic spleen venter of a record. Pennyroyal Tea just sits a bit clunky in there.

honestly sometimes I wonder if milk it and pennyroyal tea were the closing two tracks I would have enjoyed the album even more
