Archspire is one of the only exceptions of modern tech death where the music is not directionless technicalities and self-indulgent guitar mastery/wankery. Their compositions are actually very classical music esque, I remember I did not want to like them at all but I ended spinning their last album like crazy...

I enjoyed that one but not as much as Relentless Mutation. Dasein sounded like Gorod on speed, and as a Gorod fan I just found it lacking in originality.

Well it means some of us feel the music goes nowhere on many occasions. Compositionally some of us like music to have a path. A path that gives the song/album some sense of direction. Most music is composed with a sense of purpose and direction. Watch how The Lord of Rings OST was made for example. Outstanding in those aspects. Many times modern tech death seems to have infinite riffs that lead nowhere, like they are there for the sake of flexing outstanding technical guitar skills and nothing else.

But what is “nowhere?” Obviously the music goes “somewhere,” or it would just stop. You can’t possibly know if their motivation is to just show off or write something that actually sounds cool to them. I’m wiling to bet that the vast majority of musicians think it sounds cool, similar to how all the fans think it sounds cool
