When I listen to this album I go: "This is better than a 4, but I don't like enough to give it a 4.5". It is just an amazing album but Idk why I don't like it more

I have the same thought, but with 4.5 and 5.

That first clean section is a tad long but it's still super evil and cool sounding. All the heavy riffs and vocals are so good though so they definitely outweigh any problems the song might have.

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.

Alright fellas, so I am not a metal person (just look at my pie chart in my profile haha.) I know shit about metal or any of its subgenres, but the word going around is that this is pretty much the best metal album out there. Should I give it a listen? Is it just awesome for metalheads, or does it appeal to a wider audience. The review is tempting and well done, so what should I do?

Opeth seems to get respect from a wide variety of listeners, though they are definitely a very heavy band. This album and Still Life would be a great place to start with them. And if you're into softer music, (I'm assuming this because you have a Jack Johnson avatar ) you should also get their Damnation album. You can't go wrong with any of those three.

Thor nice avatar by the way.

I listen to softer music, definitely yes, but I think I can appreciate any kind of music.

Back in my middle school I would listen to some Slayer and whatnot so I'll give this a try...why not.

I would actually recommend it, despite not being a huge fan myself, everyone else seems to love it and I'm definitely in the minority.

opeth is incredibly accessible to people not normally into heavier music with harsh vocals. great band to start heavy music with tbh.

I'm with you Crimson, don't give in! lol

Truthfully, I find this rather boring overall, but the great moments are just too awesome for me not to give this a "great" rating. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Still Life all the way.

dub sean, you might not want to start with this album. It might very well be the greatest metal record ever made, but if you want to start getting into heavy metal you should ease your way in. Id personally recommend Iron Maiden or old Metallica before listening to something as heavy as Blackwater Park.

Then again, I guarantee its more creative then anything else you probably listen to. Hard to explain, but if you can appreciate that, then I guess you could enjoy this album.
