‘In the Mist’ is a spiritual experience, top 5 Opeth track.

That first drum roll into the perfect riffing that ensues is golden. What a debut.

Finally starting my Opeth journey. I like this already after about 3 listens, but it is a hell of a lot to digest

Yeah going chrono you get slapped in the face with the 15 minutes songs. Thankfully I get hooked as soon as Mist starts.

MAYH looks like one of their easier-to-digest early albums, and Morningrise is at least 10 mins shorter than this. It really fits the autumn mood right now

MAYH is also their best probably. Infinite replay value, stunning atmosphere, GOAT riffs on the planet, impeccable flow, etc. etc. etc.

Listening to this at the min while watching the footy having just polished off Bakewell tart and custard m/
This one is special. Definitely right up there as a contender for no 1 in the bands discog for me.

Oh man, don't blame you. They captured some magic on this one for sure, and Mikael was 17 or so here!

Was he really? No way.

He so was.
Ok, almost. This was released in '95, he's from '74. So he was 20, but still.

Ah, it was recorded in early '94! So he indeed was 18-19.

Very impressive.
Probably had some bearing on why this is very rooted, atmospheric and unquestionably Northern European influenced metal record.
I think this one sounds fresher than a lot of the later stuff but it’s all quality.

he was still posing in front of his Bathory poster at this point

Agreed. To me they've released 10 at-least-great records in a row, among which many 5.0s; and they've recovered themselves gloriously with In Cauda after a two release dud. Great band.
And this does have something special, yeah. A very honest and pure record.

If I had to give another 5 to an Opeth album I would stick it on this. A debut to rival the very best.

I feel like the bass playing is pretty good on here actually, but it is mixed too far in the background most of the time
