Pretty much, they're just going against everyone's expectations and doing something different. It's nice to see them controlling their own fate and not forcing themselves to do something they don't want/feel is right.

absolutely. and i fucking hate fred's wanking, pete's solos complimented mike's so nicely. also axe, while the guy is an incredible drummer, lopez gave the band this very wide open atmosphere that is severely lacking now

Somewhat agree. Lopez was a better fit for the band but Axe has really come into his own. He really carries Heritage along with Mendez.
