I get the idea of a song feeling out of place on an album, but never think about it when I hear it, and don't ever take issue with it.
Someone once told me one of my songs felt out of place on an album and all I could think was "do you want everything to sound the same". I know that's not what they mean, but throwing a curveball in the middle is interesting to me. In the process of making an album, if you make a song you really like, put it on there. I think "Burn the Witch" leading makes sense, but putting it 4th or 5th wouldn't have changed how I feel about it being on the album.

I understand that perspective. Personally i like albums that are a very cohesive listen and sometimes songs that are very 'out there' in context of the album can disrupt the flow for me. Altough, like you mentioned, throwing a curveball can also help stopping the album to be too monotonous. It's a tough balance and it depends on the context of the album and the personal perspective of the listener.

If the song is good enough, it works!

Never understood the disdain for Burn the Witch. It's a great standalone song; not a great opener in my personal opinion but I rearranged the entire tracklist anyway to run more smoothly as I deem it.

Wish I could find my tracklist but I made Glass Eyes the first song, Burn the Witch was like 3rd, and it flowed beautifully.

i do like the strings in the numbers, but i'm already done with the song at the point they take prominence

Ful Stop is very clearly the greatest track here, and one of the greatest tracks in Radiohead's entire oeuvre, for that matter. But The Numbers is a valiant runner up.

Yep ful stop is a belter, what makes this album so impressive is it does contain some of the bands greatest material. Present Tense is one of the greatest songs of all time tbh.

Burn the Witch doesn't fit as an opener and is also easily the worst song here.

Burn the Witch is good but it sounds like it belongs on another album entirely
