I find it very hard to pick a fave from this. It all blends together a bit, with all the quirky stop-start transitions and everything. That's what I love about it, it's a whole disk full of twists and turns that gel together somehow. Also I never listen to individual tunes here, always the full thing.
That being said, I have soooooooo much love for Nepenthe.

They're cool, but I suppose they couldn't find a fit for them on the tracklist. I enjoy Face in the Snow a lot, but maybe it felt like a cut from some earlier Opeth albums, maybe they didn't want too much of a callback. All of this is based off of nothing tho. Good thing you reminded me of them tho. I love blues Opeth very dearly

Face in the Snow is really good but Pyre is amazing. That, I Feel the Dark, Haxprocess, Folklore, and Marrow of the Earth are my favs on here. Nepenthe and Lines in my Hand are runner-ups.

Let's face it. "Heritage" is a very good album but is inferior to almost all their albums. Maybe "Orchid" can be less good. And I said, maybe.
The problem is that all their albums are great.

Damnation
Orchid
Deliverance
Ghost Revs
Watershed
maybe even Still Life
are all worse or more boring or both, and that doesn't even touch the stuff they released since

That is a blasphemy. "Still Life" is their best work in many miles.

Still Life's jazz fusion nods are a liability, whereas this one's are almost exclusively a boon

Do you have any problems with jazz fusion?

wow a based metal take from johnny damn
Ghost Revs> this tho, the others I can actually see being less interesting at least

Jazz fusion varies from fun goofery to one of the most flatulent genres ever, so it depends - but it goes hand in hand with the worst parts of prog (minus the cheese, sometimes)
On Still Life specifically, its worst crime is enabling the band to noodle over already boring ballads - Benighted is probably the worst clean track they made pre-Damnation

I respect your opinion but I completely disagree. I love jazz/fusion in general and I cannot see any problem in "Still Life". In relation to Opeth, we are in opposite sides Johnny. But, that's ok to me. I can live with that. But, Still Life, Damnation, Ghost Reveries and Watershed are simply some of my favourite albums from them. These are my feelings.

Heritage for Top 3 Opeth!!!! Maybe Top 4 but oh well. It's always close between Morningrise, MAYH, GR and this one for me.
