reps Damnation and yet apparently here...
"...and the band just outright imitates the sounds of the past without bringing anything new to the table"

Blissful

damnation is a stuffy pity party and this is a wholesome nerd fantasy. could not care less how 'original' any of it is tbh - even on the level of homage, the band earnestly sound like they love the music they're playing and the opeth formula for riffs/ballads/dynamics was so played out by the end of ghost revs that the comparatively oblique songwriting decisions here are welcome. tracks like Haxprocess and Nespithe feel the most refreshed and un-self-conscious this band had been since probably Morningrise - and good for them

I like this album, really. This is a very good work as happens with all their works. They don't have weak works. This is what I think.
But, said this, I must confess that I was a bit disappointed with "Heritage" when I listened to it in the first listenings. It was a "disappointing" work when compared with "Ghost Reveries" and "Watershed". "Damnation" is a unique work in their discogarphy and is clearly better that "Heritage".
Said this too, and despite I like the album, it still is my least preferred of their last works. I still prefer "Pale Communion", "Sorceress" and "In Cauda Venenum" to "Heritage".

I actually agree 100% with that take e210013. Still hoping this one finally clicks one day for me. I really like it regardless, but not like the others.

Put my foot in my mouth again, didn't I...
What I'm trying to get at is I have less a problem with Damnation because the compositions are much more structured and despite going for a more laid-back approach, it still felt like songs that came from Opeth. Past albums had tracks that hinted toward this direction. But for Heritage, it just sounds like it's music that came from other artists and which Opeth tried to incorporate for themselves.
That, and Heritage has too many quiet passages that seem to go nowhere and the band doesn't have the chops to make these passages work.
Hopefully that makes more sense and is less contradictory?

It does make more sense that way indeed, although I do not agree at all obviously, with the 5.0 and the excessive praise and uncontrollable love spamming for this from me 💚🥰🤭🌞💚

I do like this and it really grew on me A LOT but putting it on the same level as GR or Watershed is absolutely insane to me lol.

Nothing beats everything from MAYH-GR besides Deliverance, which is still great. Aside from the beginning of The Devil's Orchard, Slither, and the second half of Famine, I don't get how this is derivative of other artists beyond just having a general style and aesthetics of '70s prog overall. I actually find it more original than PC.
