not my favorite in terms of songwriting but sonically it’s absolutely perfect. it’s just so lush and vibrant. one of those albums to kick back in a comfortable chair with a nice bourbon.

Axe really killed it on the drums here. Per Wiberg’s absence is still felt on Opeth albums imo

This is a pretty strong album. I hear that of 2024, their upcoming album will return to some harsh vocals. But I prefer them without the growls.

"But I prefer them without the growls."

My heart stopped for a minute while reading this.

Might be the most shocking sentence to exist on the internet

Jammed this and the two before it today and have realised that Opeth hit a low with Damnation and got incrementally better with every release up until here
maybe I've run out excuses for never having heard their other prog albums hm

Yeah Johnny this is one of their highs don't let anyone fool you. It's wonderfully twisted and alive and genuinely adventurous.

Johnny never struck me as much of a flute guy.

Oh you Titan!

No but Famine is my favourite song from the newpeth era.

flute is definitely a bottom 5 instrument for me (and I used to think Famine was the worst thing here until yesterday), but we can abide a few exceptions
and yeah Watershed isn't that far behind, but feels more muddled. prog doesn't always sit as well and the sequencing/stylistic interplay is mucky - band biting off more than they could chew, but heading in the right direction (and away from the blockbuster neckbeard pander on GR hooray)

I can't understand why one would find Damnation bad and yet laud this. The former is my favorite album of Opeth's entire catalog (its depressing and very minimalistic approach just resonates with me), but after 13 years, I still can't find anything I like about this album. To me, Heritage just perpetually drones by, most of the songs go nowhere interesting and the band just outright imitates the sounds of the past without bringing anything new to the table. It perpetually irks me when bands decide they make "progressive" music and just decide to sound like they are trapped in the 70s. You're not progressing, you're just stuck in the past...
