Yeah, I used to defend Baby Blue (except for the solo,) but it is the worst song the band has written. A big shit spot in a jarring clusterfuck of good songs.

'I wrote a short story revolving around The Pecan Tree'
I'd be interested in that.

I've heard that song like twice and didn't think there was anything glaringly wrong with it

It's just so weak and has no redeeming qualities. I skip it every time now or I might have some more specific complaints.

they threw like a 1000 ideas into that song and structurally it doesn't make sense

999 mediocre ideas and 1 unforgivably bad 90's mainstream metal whammy ballad solo.

Maybe it's because I grew up listening to Arch Enemy but I am not bothered by that solo at all

no Michael Amott solo is in the same galaxy as the one in baby blue. And I'm just relistening to Baby Blue again now and it's not actually as bad as I'd thought. The solo's definitely misplaced and stylistically awkward, but it only gets super bad in the latter half when he starts letting the wammy bar do most of the work. Up until then it's basically decent Alcest worship. But then they do those wimpy chugs and the lead melody at ~7:00 is really awkward.
I still don't get wtf Gifts for the Earth is supposed to be tho. Like were they trying to be Isis with those faux post-metal heavy riffs or what.

The solo isn't all that bad overall, but it takes the song from being just an average song that fits into the record to a sore thumb real quick.

perhaps they were confused! >:]

Haha yeah, it doesn't fit at all, but I dig it. Reminds me of Norwegian mwY.

the way the heavy riff cuts in is soooo abrupt and jarring it's like they didn't even try to make it sound right tho. I wouldn't love a post-metaly dfhvn but it'd be an interesting route to take at least.

Yeah, I think they could do something cool with it if they put some focus into an actual direction and stuck with it. That's the opposite of what happened with New Bermuda.

They just need to. Not. Rush. It. Dunno why they boxed themselves in with scheduled studio time when they weren't even finished writing it.

Me either. I was worried when they were talking about it pre-release and my worries were justified. That said, I still think From the Kettle Onto the Coil was the best New Bermuda song and it wasn't even on it...
