Alright. The problem is that the beer that gets mass marketed is basically piss-water that serves no purpose other than to get you drunk. However, beer, like other forms of alcohol, is an art. Bear(?) with me here I'm kind of drunk. Once you get past the shitty commercialized beers there is an enormous community of craft breweries that offer a distinct variety of styles and flavors.
To answer your question, no, ales are generally not 'thick.' A good ale is thin and crisp. Myself, I prefer an India Pale Ale, also known as an IPA. It's generally a clear golden/amber color with a strong bitter taste and a crisp, refreshing feel.
