The genre itself never took my fancy, I've not even listened to Bathory at all. What I have heard is some Darkthrone, Mayhem and Emporer as well as albums that inspired the genre like Venom's 'Black Metal', Celtic Frost's 'To Mega Therion', Mercyful Fate's 'Don't Break the Oath' and Possessed's 'Seven Churches'

Some early first wave black metal is cool (because it isn't really black metal).

The genre as a whole just really isn't my thing at all, a lot of it sounds kinda silly to my ears.

Well I guess it's like that for everyone at first, but I believe once you accept that it has to be that way to express the correct atmosphere it can only get better. I mean look at Borknagar's debut, I can't imagine it done in any other way.

I used to dislike black metal back when I first gave it a shot since a lot of well-known and praised bm are fairly unimpressive, now it's among my favourite genres ever... it's an acquired taste for sure

I like most forms of metal that doesn't have '-core' at the end. I am serious about giving black metal more time when I can because I like the earlier albums that inspired the genre and perhaps if I acquire the taste for it I can make many more awesome discoveries, which is what makes life worth living.
