I agree, this album is super-boring, Hollywood is the only good song here (pretty good, actually). It is either Nick or me, who got completely lost over the years. I guess it is me, right?
Nevertheless, this album resonates well with his Red Hand Files project. I preferred the version of him chasing reporters for asking dumb questions, and the lunatic singing to a goat at a campfire in "Nick the Stripper" than the wise old man full of compassion.
I think writing something as cheesy as "Into my arms" back around 1997 could have been a turning point. I recently saw Distant Sky - Live in Copenhagen, which is fantastic, but when the crowd joins him singing into my arms, it is nauseating. How the hell can it be part of the same setlist as From Her to Eternity???

This heaving more rates than From Her to Eternity is disheartening.

Agreed, not surprising, though. That one was underground/alternative, while Ghosteen is more mainstream, Vangelis-light with vocals.

Hadn't thought of Vangelis before, but yea I can kinda hear the influence now.

idk I’m always a fan of artists doing art for their own sake and the audience just being along for the ride (even if you hate it)
am reading his long form interview book with Sean O’Hagan, and the way he talks about this album is beautiful. it’s clearly super important to him even if it doesn’t resonate with his entire fan base

I was surprised when people knocked this album as much as they did. Seeing less of that now, mind. Maybe they don't think it's a great 'Bad Seeds' album, but Boatman's Call was similarly stripped back and that's a fan favourite.
Keep meaning to read that book.

It's not that it's stripped back, it's just a cringe album

Ah right. My b, I keep forgetting it can't be bad because it came after the death of his son. I gotta purchase a copy of the Nick Cave stanboy's rulebook so I don't keep making these mistakes

Pele may die, flowers might bloom in winter but you can always count on Gyromania to make a complete tit of himself.

Got a 200 song Nick Cave playlist put together for today at work to jam over the next couple days. I haven't spent much time with his stuff lately and I am feeling like I owe myself.

I need to revisit this to see if my opinion holds, remember it being pretty dull. I actually increased my rating for this on the assumption I'd misjudged it, lol (wanting to return at some point / update and not wishing to sully the good name of Nick Cave without the proper care and attention!)
"but Boatman's Call was similarly stripped back and that's a fan favourite."
yeah, that one's missing something too, although likely better than this. It's a little 'one note', perhaps.

there are many anti-climatic lows on this, both lyric- and instrumentation-wise, but probably the "papa bear - baby bear" lines in the t/t are the ones that hurt the most

Idk man, it’s all pretty bad. Genuinely one of the worst albums ever written imo

Bold claim. Still seeking re-verification. It will be 'soon-ish' probably, idk
Then again, you really dislike Skeleton Tree, right? So maybe you're wrong

i don't "really" dislike it, i'd probably rate it a 2.5/5. i think it has some good ideas but it's more or less a chore to sit through front to back esp in comparison to their best albums. this is at least 10 times worse than skeleton tree
