This is definitely the least Hans National album imaginable.

"Typically subtle in its genius, lots of nooks and crannies to explore, lots of beautiful narrow melodies. It's ace."
This is why I brought up Sorrow

How low would this album's average have to drop before people find it disrespectful?

below 3.7

Imagine if that album art was accompanied by the album title:
'In our busy lives the best toothpaste brand can be hard to find'
I would FIVE that in an instant irrespective of song writing content
I still don't know what the five colour paint squidges represent? The band members? Is it like the cover of Load? Are bodily fluids mixed in there?

luci, as much as I don't get on with this album if it dropped below a 3.5 I would find that a little bit distressing.

I'm confident it will be 3.9 or 4 by the end of the year

exhibiting a downward trend tho - and National stans have already voted
it could attract a new set of fans I guess

Not this National stan :/
Album is heading towards a 3.5+ for me though, it's growing a bit.
I predict a 3.6 average by year's end

I bet 3.7-3.8 is where it’ll even out with 3.5 and 4 being the most common ratings.

this did not excite me in the slightest :[

I find it frustrating as there are alot of nice moments, but few of the songs are good the entire way through. Even Sleep Well Beast had 4-5 good songs. This is like a bunch of decent/cool moments just randomly thrown across the album. IDK, maybe it will grow, but I loved every great National album the first time I heard them.

The part in "The Pull of You" when Matt's higher register bursts open the first spoken word section is my early favorite moment on this album and maybe one of the better National moments in general
Song as a whole sort of reminds me of "Marbles" by Tindersticks
|

yep, that part alone saves it from being a bad song according to the detractors

Dyl, I don't actually like that bit, it just sounds clumsy to me
But one man's clumsy is another man's raw
Also dolphin balloon is clearly the high point, if filled with helium

'but few of the songs are good the entire way through. Even Sleep Well Beast had 4-5 good songs.'
Hans I'm with you, there are no real songs here - in the sense of satisfying all the way through, honest to god, 'attention grabbed and maintained throughout' proper tunes equal to the band's usual level

To me, the best songs by a wide margin are Light Years and Rylan. Quiet Light is pretty good, because it actually sounds like an old National song. Where is Her Head could be a big grower. I don't like the fact that Matt isn't even the lead singer on this either.
