this thread was so much more fun when we all could just agree that the string outro on Crush was the best part of the album. can we go back to those good ol days

The opener to it has more riffs in it than Reptile does.
Theres a much more obvious melody on it.

ObZen sucks and I don't like Meshuggah, Periphery add way more variation than they ever could, also Periphery are more inspired by SikTh so the discussion is kind of irrelevant anyway

i wish people would just be honest and stop pretending they're bothered by chugging or shredding, it's literally only the vocals that make this band so divisive. objective fact.

SikTh have more variation too.

“side note, since we're talking about comparing to similar bands, how come Meshuggah can chug for 45 straight minutes and nobody says shit but then periphery does it twice in a 16 minute song and suddenly riots break out and sputnik is brought to its knees”
Because very rarely does a djent band attempt to actually emulate what Meshuggah does other than ape their guitar tone. Yea they do chug a lot, but it’s not common for them to hug the same note for long periods of time and there’s usually some kind of interesting polyrhythm. And even on a track like Bleed where they do hug the same note for a long time, the rhythmic variation and transitions on that track are pretty wild, along with Haake’s footwork on the double bass. It’s really a stretch to compare Meshuggah to most modern djent bands because they try to accomplish totally different things, and this is coming from someone who isn’t a huge Meshuggah fan.

One of the problems I’ve always had with this band is it doesn’t really ever seem like they have anything worthwhile to say. Not every band has to, I enjoy the musical proficiency but in their case it often feels like wasted talent.

Man, "Sentient Glow" and "It's Only Smiles" hit right in the feels. Second listen through of the album and I keep finding more I like.

More or less, I think there are some other factors as well but this always seems to be the main issue for those that don't like this band.

wait do you unironically think this? There's no way you literally only listen to bands you genuinely think have "something to say".
