"There's a fine line between being really good a your instrument, being really good at writing music, and being able to do both at the same time."
That's actually a pretty good explanation.
"These guys are always fun when in "wank" mode or whatever you wanna call it. Also I'd love to hear other albums like this if they exist. Genuinely find the vibe of this album to be very unique" [2]

Well, I already have this thread in my discussions, so I might as well participate.
The band definitely has immense talent when it comes to playing their songs. I am sure they are really fun live. Now, the song-writing on albums like this is virtually non-existent. It is dreadfully dull and forgettable. It overwhelms you with its energy and instrumental finesse, but effectively channels it into nothing. No matter how much you listen to it, you'll only really remember that it was grandiose and technically incredible, but you just can't pick up on anything else. And an evoked feeling alone is not enough.

Its fine to not find the songwriting special but "non-existant songwriting" is over the top. I think the fact that so many people find this to be surprisingly engaging for an instrumental says enough. If people truly disregarded songwriting then they'd be listening to one of a million things that's more technically impressive than this.

I still can't pick up on the song-writing here. It is just an instrumental orgy and nothing much above it for me.

Then I guess it's a question of priority. I for once love it if songs are unpredictable and surprise me with new parts and/or structures. I'm getting bored pretty fast by standard structured songs somehow, which makes me appreciate some good records way less than they deserve.

I think the album is remarkably engaging, and not really due to technical ability either - each song has a different mood, and there are some really nice hooks (e.g No. 0's grooves).

I kind of wonder if they would benefit to the addition of another guitarist, or some other type of lead instrument, at least. The more post rock/chill sounding sections are great but when they go more full throttle and heavier, it kind of falls a little flat for me.
I haven't sat down to really listen to how often the guitarist does it, but I always remember thinking he goes a little too excessive on those tremolo lead parts when I play this.
For me, there are parts of this album that definitely straddles the line of being technically proficient in a tasteful way and then them just fitting as many notes as possible in.

Actually gonna bump this down just a bit. It’s very good but I agree it does delve into wanky territory at many times. Very talented and awesome nonetheless.

Maybe try Save Us From the Archon - How Terrible, The Undergrowths Jaws That Tangle. Kinda felt like a mix of this and Haunted Shores or something. Just heard it yesterday.

Appreciate the rec, I'll check it out. Interesting to hear the wank arguments, I saw this as a breath of fresh air in a world of wanky instrumental metal. But to each their own

I thought they hit the balance very well here. I don't usually enjoy this type of stuff a lot. I think it helps that they are used to writing with a vocalist because sometimes I hear portions where vocals wouldn't be out of place though in these instances they aren't needed to carry the sections? Idk how to explain that.
Hope you like the rec.

@dbizz checked out that Save Us From the Archon album and really liking it, it's better than their second (which was the first one of theirs I heard)

oooh i love me some Save Us From the Archon, even if I think these bands are verrrry different. SUFTA is super wanky but they're really good at crafting beautiful melodies that grab me from the chaos. Night Verses is much more restrained/focused by comparison. Still think the first SUFTA LP (Thereafter) is their best
