I can't help but think It's National going through the motions. "Better churn out another one of these albums we do but put some blips and bloops on there to 'freshen' it up. That's it pal rattle one out on the piano"
I'll probabaly still 5 it at some point.

They've reached that stage they can just potter about in the studio like R.E.M after 'Monster' or Radiohead after 'Amnesiac'.
Pottering about suits 'em more than most.

I think a lot of people felt lukewarm on TWFM at first as well.

Looking forward to seeing them live in two weeks, that'll confirm my 5

Adolf (what a lovely name btw) you are correct, the reaction to this has been identical to that of the sleeper-classic TWFM

That said, i will allow SWB's average to share TWFM's out of respect for the gods, but if it surpasses it, i will strike sputnik down.

How can you not enjoy stuff like 'Demons', 'Humiliation' and 'Slipped'? Some of their best songs are on that album :/

Lol i have it at a 4, i still like the album, it just seems to value being pretty over having captivating songwriting or great hooks

Ah, I didn't check your rating. Fair enough, I can see why someone could prefer this new album - it has a totally different atmosphere and feel. A bit brighter for the most part.

My bet is the average on this will drop to a 4.0 before too long but it will eventually creep back up to a 4.1 in a year or two and that'll become its permanent score.

I think it'll eventually settle at a 3.9, a large enough number of people have had enough of this band

My bet is it'll have the effect of growing on people over time like TWFM did. I obviously wasn't here when it first came out but when I joined the site it was in the 4.0 range; similarly High Violet was in the 4.2 range and Boxer at 4.3 (its current 4.4 is very volatile though).
Anyway, I'm currently about 80% sure this is a 4.5. The other 20% leans toward being a 4 rather than a 5 though.

bands starting to get a bit stale yeah but at this point you either like the formula or not, more of what they do best here, they dont really take a chance but i don't think fans of them would want them to anyway

I'm starting to insert listening to this album among my general listening on headphones out and about and that's always illuminating after listening to this album back to back non stop.
Sounds incredible and really vibrant in that context.
"Fuck it, it's still a 5."
