the screams here are tasteful, if that's possible

I like the overall atmosphere and vibe of Daisy most. But this and TDAG are close to equal for me

everything they do is tasteful (musically speaking)

Boney if TDAG was a 4 for you then I predict you'll rate this in the 2.5-3.5 range
Though I may be mainly saying that because of my 4 for that and 3 for this ¯_(ツ)_/¯

"you'll enjoy them differently depending on your age/maturity/musical preference"
I'm in my late 20s and I'd like to think I'm mature. I lean towards mellower stuff these days

actually not a huge fan of the atmosphere on this album. it feels as if it's trying to deaden your emotions

yeah then you'll want to approach TDAG first, then SciFi if you haven't already, then Daisy, then Deja, then YFW if you still care to. (not sure what you have and haven't heard, too lazy to check ratings, just giving blanket advice)

I've listened to this band for years, just never got around to sci fi for some reason

I have a complicated history with screaming in music. Once upon a time I would have said that I unilaterally hated them even though I hadn't really tried any music with them. Now that I've flirted with a bit of metal, I've grown to be ok with them in that context (because there, screams - i.e. harsh vox - are just the default vocal style most of the time). In "normal" rock music though, or any situation in which screaming is juxtaposed with mostly "normal" singing, it can be more complicated. In this situation, screams (to me) are more likely to come across as a gimmick or as feigning emotion (Look at me! I'm so pained that I'm screaming!) - when executed well, they can be very effective, but they're very hard to do well.

I'm predicting you won't like this then but let me know anyway, I'm kinda curious tbh considering we've conversed for years and I kinda just assumed you'd never bother with the band

I never thought I would either Sowing (admittedly, partially out of the fear that I would actually enjoy them and incite the wrath of the Doof/zak clan) but then I randomly came across “Millstone” and “Jesus Christ” on YouTube and was blown away.

You're going to be assimilated into the Brand New clan

Yeah I was never obsessed with Brand New until I heard TDAG (in particular Jesus Christ). After Deja I viewed them as a good band but they weren't changing my life. TDAG is special...it's one of those albums on this site that people tend to assume is a hive mind 4.5, but it truly deserves the acclaim. It's every bit as influential as OK Computer, Aeroplane, Jane Doe (pick your ideal album).

If given the option at this point in my life, I would listen to Daisy > SF > TDAG > YFW > Deja

Ok after three play throughs, I’m settling in at a strong 3.5. I love the abrasive ness, haunting qualities, surrealistic experimentation etc. But that said, I don’t feel like all of it quite succeeds. That said it’s definitely a very good album (you stole and vices being my fav tracks)
All this said, I definitely feel it starting to grow on me, and I could see this ultimately become a close 2nd for me besides D and G.
Yeah, admittedly, this was slightly disappointing followed the Devil but I can’t fault it. D and G is such a masterpiece. This will continue to grow on my and my rating may very well change.
Moving on to Sci fi after this, then Deja.

I remember my older sister got really into Brand New when she was a teenager and she picked up this CD and played track 1 (Vices) and I remember I was terrified and had my mind blown when the intro sample song ended and Jesse starts howling like a lunatic

I don’t know guys, this is good but not THAT good. I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed after TDAG. Maybe it’ll continue to grow though. I do love the haunting and chaotic atmosphere. You Stole and Vices are the highlights. Noro isn’t a bad song, but it’s quite underwhelming and slight as a closer.
Let’s see what Sci fi and Deja have for me (skipping YFW for now). Definitely really loving BN so far though.
