I'd be all kinds of worked up if they called it a day. One of my favorites. You'd be hard pressed to find a more consistent band that has been consistently putting out music since the 90's. Not only consistent, but their most recent albums are arguably their best.

"they topped with brave murder day and after that it's like who even cares"
Far from any sort of reality.

"It's fantastic, but they've just surpassed it."
If I had to narrow Katatonia down to 3 essential albums, it'd be Brave Murder Day for being the peak of their death/doom era, Last Fair Deal Gone Down for cementing what would become their "signature" sound, and The Great Cold Distance because while it isn't necessarily my favorite (it's second only to LFDGD), that album cycle generated what is probably IMO a pool of songs that can be considered some of their best songs ever i.e. Leaders, My Twin, July (the obvious choice cuts from the album really) and including the B-sides Dissolving Bonds and Unfurl which are amazingly high tier songs that it's mind boggling that they didn't make it onto the album proper.

LFDGD didn't age very well for me. I find it underproduced and sort of shallow now. But damn, did I hear it a lot once. That delicious melancholy mm mmm.
They are better songwriters now.

Also, wait outside is another hidden Katatonia gem that didn't make it onto a proper album.

Production wise, I can actually agree with you there. It's quite rough around the edges but a lot of that has to do w/the circumstances with how it was recorded. Viva Emptiness while it sounds less underproduced suffered the same fate of production being compromised due to how it was recorded. They talk about how recording both albums were a nightmare in the Last Fair Day Gone Night documentary. Their albums sound a lot better now, but I still standby LFDGD being one of my favorites because of how strong the songs are.

LFDGD is probably my 2nd favourite Katatonia after BMD tbh

Help Me Disappear, Sulfur, Ashen, No Devotion, the Funerals to Come EP... many songs to find indeed. Scarlet Heavens is straight gothic rock (and it's the last 10+ minutes song they made) and I wish they did more of that, sweet goth vocals in there

Now that you mentioned it, Quiet World was a song I overlooked and was only slightly aware of for awhile. It wasn't until I saw them play it live (as of now, they've only played it during their Fall 2013 US Tour) that I went back and gave it a proper listen and now it's become yet another lost B-side gem for me. In the words of Renske himself, a very shoegazy song if they ever had one.

The final part of Quiet World is so pleasant. The heavy section is likely a precursor of TD's heavier sound

Depending on the day/mood, yeah Katatonia's my favorite band. Definitely a top 5 band for me surely.

Well, they're not exactly painting from a wide palette.
But in their genre, sure.

I don't know, for a band that started as a death/doom project and eventually took on some more post/progressive touches, I'd say they've done more with their sound than most bands ever attempt.

Sometimes I listen to them and they feel like a top 3 favorite band, sometimes i'm not in the mood though. Overall definitely in my top 10.

Fair observation there, Xenorazr. I consider Katatonia to have gone through 3 phases in their career. Obviously death/doom in the beginning, then goth/doom/alt during their mid period, and finally proggened goth rock/metal from TGCD onward.
