It's the enemy Row, every melody and vocal is an irritant. This is the equivalent of being strapped to a chair and forced to watch MTV reality shows all day for me.

Even in the 90's I always thought these dudes were the harbingers of something awful...which turned out to be whiney emo pop fluff, so I avoided them other than obviously hearing most of their singles.

so you don't even know what they sound like outside a few singles but you know what they were the harbingers of? sounds like some off-colour stuff to me my man especially because they made two of the absolute best albums of the genre

I've heard the Blue Album played as background music at a million house parties, never needed to actually sit down with it

There wasn't any music like this and then 'The Sweater Song' and 'Buddy Holly' hit MTV and suddenly 20 sub genres formed all with the exact same vocal tone and melodies so yeah they created it all - it was plain as day in the 90's.

The genre itself is what I have the problem with, but there was no mainstream genre before Weezer, so by that logic I have a problem with Weezer.

Guess they're the sound of a lot of people's youth here, esp in the States I'm guessing, so maybe there's a lot of nostalgia and childhood association going on - but believe me this is some whack shit once taken out of that context.

Is that a reflection on the band though? Bands like Mineral and Rites of Spring are the reason we have shitty emo nowadays, should we hate them for that? Is it Wu-Tang Clan and Nas' fault that we have Hopsin today? pretty bad basis for disregarding a whole discography if you ask me man

I don't believe you tho because you're clearly coming at this from as extreme a position of bias as I am, only in the opposite direction

No one in mainstream pop really sang like this before Weezer so I'm not denying they're innovators. I just hate this whole vocal style and melodic palette. It's not a contrived stance - its an honest gut reaction I've had whenever I've listened to them all the way back to when I was 15 years old.

I gave them a fresh shot here - hated it.

Just gonna throw in my two cents I guess

I didn't grow up with Weezer, so that takes out the nostalgia factor. I just find this to be some charmingly sweet, if not cheesy, pop rock that delivers the hooks.

I didn't grow up with em either, only really got into em coming off the tail-end of high school, still adore most of their stuff

Yeah wtferro, I do understand a lot of people like River's honest/pure take on songwriting - I do see what people like about this band.

It's not so much I hate the idea of the band, it's just the music is fundamentally the opposite of what I enjoy I guess.

Yeah, his honesty in these songs really does make a lot of their material. It's what makes Pinkerton such an emotionally potent record for me. Lays it all on the ground for everyone to see. I feel like that's what makes a lot of their 2000's stuff trash: it's like that honesty is lost. But I could definitely see this kind of songwriting getting on people's nerves as well. Fair enough.

Is this all that much fun really tho

I mean the funnest part of this I can see is that they're grown men still writing about being nerdos too shy to talk to girls and sure that's sweet an' aw but not exactly a golden ticket to a wonderland of joyous ecstatic abandon

No please don't say that - I'd then be duty bound to listen to the entire back catalogue and listen to this multiple times plus read and digest the lyrics :D

In the contrib application there was a statement along the lines of 'we like to keep things mostly positive on the site'...not sure sput is ready for a 1/5 review of this

Also with Kanye I at least like some of his work - a review of Weezer would come across as a full on bashing
