I don't know how this is possible but you're totally correct. It's like they went in the exact direction I was hoping for, but then took a massive detour and never ended up at the final destination. Pretty aggravating. I really hope they rehash some of the ideas they used here and make a more cohesive, interesting and enjoyable sound.

it was the lack of juxtaposition between abrasive dxc and ethereal pm/ambient sections which was a hallmark of theirs in their past releases esp exoplanet. This just meanders at a snails pace and even tho it flows quite nicely there's no sense of the songs 'getting' anywhere. I sort of envision the band being half asleep/on their phones/watching the tele while recording this.

Yeah, but I would say that was almost their downfall on Intrinsic, as the juxtaposition between those two was stretched too far. Songs like Geocentric Confusion and Causality knocked it out of the park, but the rest of the album was just so conflicting. This seems to blur the lines which I thought was a great direction, but I totally agree that there IS no sense of it going anywhere. Meandering is the perfect term to describe it, as you said. Fuck! Makes me frustrated. This could have been so much better. It starts off strong, meanders, picks up its shit on Thrive, and then just fuckin' meanders into oblivion.

In all seriousness I completely agree with all your points. Album is sadly underwhelming in all regards.

I have faith. Their next will be their magnum opus.

If they go back to Exoplanet's sound then they might make a return to form. As for a magnum opus, I think the ship has sailed.
|

oh yeah the duality between the two styles has to feel organic not constrained because that's their 'signature sound' or whatever, hence why I wasn't a huge fan of intrinsic. So imo this is like potential and disappointment in equal measure and it is frustrating. And I always forget how much it meanders every time i get the desire to listen to it. Not good for the blood pressure.
yeah the ship flew into deep fucking space with exoplanet imo

Best case scenario they make a more progressive Exoplanet and crank out maybe a 3.5 - 4 album, but they'll never get to another high point imo. I don't think, given the relative success of this release, they'll be switching styles any time soon.

No faith from either of ya hey? Norma Jean did it last year, I think there's still time for contortionist.
