It's strange that the reviewer gave this a 4.5 and gave such a low score to Night. I don't say that because I'm partial to Night, but because they sound so similar

It's not strange at all, and the fact that they sound similar doesn't mean I should also love Night.
The compositions here are just so, so much better than anything Night offers with the exception of
"Idle Blood", and composition is everything with this band.

If anything I would say their sound is a little more tired on here. It's a good sound, it just comes across as a little derivative after Night. Night saw them change their style a bit and offers a lot of variation - look at "Departer" (one of their best songs) and the opener "Forsaker," they're worlds apart; same with Idle Blood and so on. I just listened to this recently and I don't see how the compositions are vastly superior

Again, it is not about their sound. The compositions are such that the contrasts between heavy and soft are accentuated, and instead of having an overtly heavy track like "Forsaker" contrasting a lighter tune, here they are melded with a fluidity that this band has not yet achieved. Similarly, the riffing picks up on when to be heavy or when to introduce a lick of melody, or when to break down and let the vocals carry the song for a while. Everything is more aware of what is happening around it, whereas their older stuff is not so mature and has a LOT of awkwardness to it or moments that just don't mesh with the song or album's atmosphere. Night is the New Day fell into this same trap as well for much of it's course. All three tracks you mentioned - Forsaker, Departer, and Idle Blood - are all great songs and easily the album's best, but between all those is a whole lot of confusion.

Fair enough. Although I would hold that Night is the better album (and I do agree that those three are the best songs), I don't think it's substantially better. I don't think the dichotomy between tracks in Night is as disruptive to the flow of the album as you say, and overall I think it carries its unique atmosphere and remains consistently enjoyable. Anywho, thanks for explaining your rationale - I certainly see where you're coming from concerning their maturation.
Anyone have any news on their new album?

they said in a Facebook post on New Year's Eve that they'd be writing new material this year, and on March 23 someone asked when the album would be released and they replied that "the three year bridge between studio full-lengths has become our road, so 2015." that's all I've seen them say in regards to a new album. they did confirm that they'll be releasing the Last Fair Day Gone Night live DVD in the fall, though.
