I honestly couldn't 5 this because as good as it is, there are still flaws in it I see everywhere (entirety of Shot For Me, inconsistency of Lord Knows, length of Camera, cornyass hook in We'll Be Fine, etc.)
|
| |
I'd say just 5 it. Nothing is ever perfect. Everyone has 5s with flaws. No bones there.

Shot for Me probably has some of the corniest production and melodies in both the beat and Drake's
singing/lyrics (I get it's supposed to be a throwback to more 90s R&B like Maxwell and some neosoul
but uggghhh), Camera's actually pretty good but it's like two minutes longer than it needs to be so it
just kind of draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags on and the hook in We'll Be Fine is almost as
corny as Shot For Me. And I don't mean corny like some of Drake's trademark cheesiness you have to
love, it's just ugh. Not to mention some of the features would be better off not existing (Lil Wayne
and even 3stacks in The Real Her, Nicki Minaj's second half, etc.)

As does Andre's guest on The Real Her. Gabe I'm disappointed, I'm riding Drake's dick harder than you are, and that's an accomplishment

cameras is great stuff for mixes which maybe helped me appreciate it more (esp. insofar as it is just sort of a setup for good ones go maybe). shlohmo was dj'ing on the radio and he used that and i was all like hell YEAAAA
we'll be fine is alright, not great but w/e

Lord Knows has a great beat but honestly the rapping isn't too great aside from the "going through her phone" part and the shot at haters and part of the Bawse's verse. But Drake honestly doesn't do well on those "epic, larger-than-life" beats since he's all about subtlety and even with stuff like The Ride, you can tell there was constraint. And Andre's verse on The Real Her was just decent, and on that beat it sounded dumb and they literally just tacked that little part on the end for him since while they were producing it they got a call from 3k saying he wanted to be on the album.
and yeah I do agree that Cameras can make for some pretty great mixes. Like even chopped & screwed it sounds a lot better. And We'll Be Fine is good, just not great or in the top ten tracks.

Great album, however he visits too many themes from So Far Gone, making it a bit tedious.
