I had a different perspective. I grew up at the height of Grunge. Nevermind literally changed the music world. It was absolutey massive, to the point that Cobain just hated the fame. So for In Utero, he intentionally wrote a handful of shitty songs just to piss everyone off and maybe temper the fame. Of course, being he was a masterful songwriter, about 70% of the album is still God tier, lol.

I didn't care for Scentless Apprentice that much when I was young but it grew on me hard. It's a special song to me now like most Nirvana songs. And I disagree hard about them intentionally writing shitty songs on In Utero (or on any album). They intentionally wrote some abrasive songs, there's a big difference.

I'm going to have to disagree. Cobain took massive pride in his songwriting skills, particularly the poppier songs he wrote, like About a Girl, and pretty much everything on Nevermind. Maybe I was reading the wrong essay, but I swore I read an interview or expose on Cobain where he said he intentionally wanted to piss people off with In Utero, whereas for Nevermind, he intentionally wanted to draw them in.

If he intentionally wrote shitty songs, then he put together a masterpiece.

Ill agree with that for the most part. The majority of In Utero goes hard. Pennyroyal Tea ftw

I thought Cobain kind of hated Nevermind... That was always my impression. I doubt he took any pride from that album tbh. Really good album though. Milk It is god-tier, you physically hurting me here...

Check out the book Come As You Are the Story of Nirvana. When he was writing Nevermind, he wanted it to be the best rock album ever. After it became as famous as it did, he hated the attention and thus withdrew.
