This album has some really good guitar playing from Petrucci. There's actually some feeling and emotion in some of his playing in the last two tracks.

But he still thinks way too hard about his solos, he needs to let them just flow
|
| |
He does let them flow on The Best of Times and one of the solos in The Count of Tuscany. His playing on those two songs is very unlike him. I wish he did more like that.
|
| |
Yeah, the Best of Times solo kicks arse
He also flows in Peruvian Skies, The Ministry of Lost Souls (outro) and Voices

Peruvian Skies solo is intense. FII has good solos, early JP was much much more mature than new JP
|
| |
Agreed johnny.
Despite a couple of wanky sections I think his performance on here in terms of solos (not so much in terms of the riffs) is up there with some of his best performances. Definitely his best performance of the 00's imo.

JP is trying way too hard to churn out riffs, he should focus on good songwriting if he can still remember how it's done
|
| |
If only...
The Shattered Fortress is top 10 (maybe even top 5) DT imo, it's one of their few songs with solid wank

I like the solo about 8min in the Nightmare To Remember but it's pretty much the only one up to much on this album.
|
| |
Wtf, that's on of the weaker solos.
The solo in The Best of Times is easily one of Petrucci's best.

This is the only Dream Theater album I can listen to and not get bored.
|
| |
Strange considering its not even top 5

Beautiful moments marred by instrumental wankery and Portnoy's cheese platter.
Should be interesting to hear their newest album with Mangini in the mix and actual freedom among the other members, especially Myung.
