Nothing by FNM reminds me of RHCP at all honestly

Mr. Bungle does occasionally on their debut though

They were compared a lot around 1990, as some kind of american funk-metal movement.

“Mr. Bungle does occasionally on their debut though“

Agreed some riffs on the debut are of a similar style.

Is this any good? 'Angel Dust' is genius, 'The Real Thing' is fun but unremarkable. I'm wondering where this stands in terms of style.

'it's like angel dust if it were played by RHCP and actually really good'
This is one weird & confusing statement. For starters it implies Angel Dust isn't good, then implies RHCP are in fact good.

Odd.

I don't even get the constant comparisons between FNM and RHCP, they are worlds apart.

Yeah, the comparisons should stop; they only really happen because the bands had a feud years ago.

'they only really happen because the bands had a feud years ago'
Yeah, this must be the only reason. Musically they're not particularly alike.

At what point in their career were RHCP 'funk-metal'?

I'll just paste some wiki:

"According to AllMusic, funk metal "takes the loud guitars and riffs of heavy metal and melds them to the popping bass lines and syncopated rhythms of funk".[7] AllMusic has claimed that "funk metal evolved in the mid-'80s when alternative bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone began playing the hybrid with a stronger funk underpinning than metal."[7] The self-titled 1984 debut album from Red Hot Chili Peppers has been cited as the first funk metal release.[8]

Faith No More have been described as a funk metal band that dabbled in rap-metal.[9]"

I don't consider RHCP funk metal at all, but whatever.

The peppers never have done metal...well maybe from mother's milk to one hot minute but that's it.
