idk i always thought symbolic was dm, maybe because it was the first dm album i have ever heard
im not really a dm pro but it really sounds like dm

"I wouldn't go that far, but it's definitely not their best. It's too streamlined compared to this one."
Agreed so fucking hard. I have no idea why such insane praise is given to Symbolic; it plays things way too safe for me

way too safe what the hell does that even mean

As in, it doesn't take nearly as many risks as the other 3 classic Death albums. There's not even much prog compared to them either.

it definitely is the lightest of their discog. at least SoP goes fast n hard
but the thing with Symbolic is that every song is so damn memorable

lightest? i always found symbolic to be their most progressive album (after tsop ofc, but that shit was obscure as fuck)
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
lightest in terms of how heavy it is. it's progressive as fuck, probably their proggiest even

Yeah, I guess it's just one of those albums where I don't understand the hype around it. I love Death, but that record has always seemed kinda average to me. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it, but a lot of it sounds really "been-there-done-that" to me compared to their other classics.

nah, it's still a 4.5 for me. only problem i really have with it is that the last two songs kinda drag.

it sounds proggier to me. guess we'll disagree. if anything, I think it takes more risks. whatever form of dm they had been playing up until symbolic, it was all pretty fast paced. they stepped way out of the mold (they helped create) for dm and slowed it down considerably and stretched the songs and the album out. at that time it was significantly longer than every single one of their other albums. plus the noticeable pitch change in chuck's vox, stepping away from dm traditions. in terms of the legacy they had created for themselves and within their "genre", I kind of see Symbolic as actually the most daring thing they did.

I have to completely disagree with the prog thing though. Proggier than ITP or SoP? That's really debatable, especially
when it comes to SoP.

I'd still put SoP as their most progressive, because its sound is absolutely nothing like their other records. It's the first metal record I ever heard, and I couldn't believe how intricate and kinda angular the whole sound was. After listening to all their other records, I still consider SoP the most unusual and all-around progressive work. All opinion though, of course

I guess I'm not necessarily speaking in terms of prog (the genre) elements, I'm speaking more in terms of doing something against the established norm, hence progressive. which, in it's time, I see symbolic being
