Ryus I am genuinely shocked that you dig this. Wish I could give it -592982/5.

Maynard is kind of insufferable (tho I like his singing) but I can't deny how hypnotic the grooves are on this thing. The bass and drums sound perfect.

Insufferable person but a good singer. Plenty like that

like the bass grooves and the drumming on this feels like it makes me ascend to a higher plane of existence, I don't even do any hallucinogens (nor do I have interest in it) but the like stoned-out writing just hits here when accompanied with good production and a vocalist that I like the timbre of

lmao i will probably never listen to it in full again but it served its purpose when i was a young lad getting into heavier music
still enjoy the grudge/lateralus/parabola/the patient a fair bit but a lot of this is pretty boring. definitely my favorite tool tho

i guess it's boring in the sense that there's a lot more focus on texture/ambience/atmospherics than just straight up riffs and it isn't as direct as like, Ænima? but for me it's all about the build-up, the best parts hit harder when preceded by minutes of build. but what can i say - "crescendocore" is sort of a weakness of mine

10K days is the most overtly emotional album of theirs tho, so that's in second place

>there's a lot more focus on texture/ambience/atmospherics
this is not an issue
the way this band generally uses them as a vehicle for payoff-oriented songwriting is stale and hackneyed. if i wanted climax-orientated metal songwriting with mesmeric drumming patterns, i'd be listening to ISIS, Neurosis or ig Oceansize over this wank puppet act ten times out of ten

@Johnny now I know were you have been at. :P

If Maynard if your guys idea of insufferable, going outside must be rough for you guys.

dunno what your neighbourhood is like, but i survived my share of maynard-types though my undergrad and have planned my environs and social groups accordingly ever since

Let's say I work in the service industry. It would be a joy to be surrounded by Maynards all day.

i thought jamming this band while tripping would live up to the hype and what it did instead was make me see right through their bullshit like never before lmao

like I even jammed this band a ton when I was like 14 but after I tried in that state I was like "hm wait they kinda suck" lmao and haven't really been swayed otherwise since

trve just offering a firsthand counter to the "tool + psychedelics = spiritual enlightenment" narrative as I have rarely seen the opposite

I don't buy into that stuff regarding any band. I like how immediate Tool is as a prog band. Johnny and I are kinda polar opposites in that respect.

admittedly the most profound experiences anyone's gonna have on psychedelics with music is just through what already is the music of their heart so it's all an individualized experience, and I guess tool particularly sees that overlap because their visual aesthetics are so textbook "trippy"

it just kinda particularly bizarrely counters the appeal of these guys to me lol
