Truth. He is missed. But Väyrynen, the new drummer, is good too from what I've heard!
Also hi Omair! It's been a while!!!

He played on Paradise Lost's last album and yeah he's very good, but he doesn't have the jazzy finesse of Axe. But maybe he kept most of that hidden during his PL days

"he doesn't have the jazzy finesse of Axe"
Yeah that's for sure. Although I must say Axe didn't use his jazziness all that much post-Heritage. At least it wasn't as upfront as I would have liked anyway.

Same! Hope they continue on the path of doing whatever they feel like. It works best for them.

As long as it's better than this

I hope the singing sounds like James Blake and the music sounds like this combined with the end product of if Jethro Tull and Gazpacho shared a bucket of popcorn while listening to Amon Duul II on acid and Benadryl

Venin....ill admit I havent spun this much but this is not average, Pale communion i can understand. I hope next record brings back some of the metal flashes shown on Sorceress. Im not expecting a "You know what guys i want to play death metal again" album

pale communion is the closest this new era has gotten to recapturing the atmosphere I really wanted out of this. Maybe I went in with the wrong mindset, but if they're not gonna go back (and judging by how out of it the metal sections on Watershed sounded, I'm not sure going back is the right idea) I really just wish they brought back some of those old Damnation vibes. That album is perfect for when I just want to lay in my bed all alone and bask in the sadness.

This album is so aimless and directionless

I think i definatly need to revisit this. In Caude nailed the atmosphere for me in a way. I think Damnation will remain a sort of lightning in a bottle for them prog rock wise, like everything was aligned just right for them to make it. Either way Opeths a beast of a band. I actually dont think i want a death metal record from them anymore, id like some heavy metal additions to the prog-rock. I really dived into Opeth in one of the toughest years of my life back in 2019, really glad i did it and saw them
Edit; : dropped to a 3.5 till i revisit it and can reasses

after Watershed I think their death metal side is spent. Felt kinda phoned in. tbh the last Whitechapel is a better "prog-death" record than Opeth could make these days if they set their mind to it.

Watersheds got some great moments. Everytime i want to jam an Opeth record though i fall into My Arms Your hearse. I think it was certainly the point when they all decided they didnt like writing death metal anymore. Mikael had half a death metal record written with this i think for memory. I think they have found their prog rock feet now though. Even still the death metal side of Opeth is one hell of a legacy to leave behind, all of those records slap

is it better than spiritual migration or metanoia? those are what i know from that band. I've been looking for something to get me HOOKED because I know they're good.
