It's one of the weaker songs here (as with Waste & No Control), but they're by all means still great songs (all 3 of them)

All hits, no misses. As the kids say.

Whaaat, Waste and Could Never Be Heaven are so good. This album is such a strong 4.5.

Watching you guys discuss I realized I didn't even know the respective track titles even though I've heard it a million times. I always put it on from the beginning to the end, I never seem to have interrupted it once.

Yeah I love waste but agree with No Control. I guess Desert would round out my three least favorites, though it’s still a great track.
Could Never Be Heaven and No Control are the only duds imo

No Control [4], Desert, and Out of Mana for me

Out of Mana’s solo puts it just over Desert for me.
The solos on this record are something else. I was floored the first time I ever heard 137.

the damn chorus to "Lit Me Up" still echoes in my head to this day. I really should get around to revisiting this and finally hear the rest of the band's discography.

Lit Me Up is one of Brand New's best songs imo

For real, perfect note to start on

how....HOW....can anyone call Could Never Be Heaven a dud. do you guys just not like like softer acoustic tracks? I've never been able to get anyone to explain how CNBH is a weak track. It's a gorgeous little tune with well-written lyrics. I love the atmosphere of it.
but yeah No Control is 100% the weakest link here. the chorus is decent, but aside from that it just screams "b-side". everyone sounds so lazy on it

just a little nothing of a track, Jesse sounds like he’s on autopilot, and the instrumental is kind of boring.
I like plenty of softer material these guys have put out (a lot of which is on this record), this song just does absolutely nothing for me though.

OK so let me preface this by saying that a weak track from Science Fiction is still great. With that out of the way, CNBH has very little going on acoustically, Jesse hits his notes but doesn't sound emotionally invested at a single juncture other than when he sings "God is dead". It's a solid 3.5/5 song with some great mewithoutYou animal imagery, but the song lacks passion.
Same could be said for No Control but I give it a slight edge over CNBH because of the instrumental outro and also because the creepiness of it fits the vibe of the album better.

Ooooo not fair! The outro is great. but it doesn’t really feel like it’s part of No Control other than being technically on the same track

outro ditty of 'Out of Mana' might be the best piece of music on the entire album tbh

Yeah if you count the outro as a separate piece then No Control is easily the worst

I read that as the best piece of music on the entire planet haha. It is a good moment though.
