A bunch of useless genre tags that are absolutely meaningless but people (mostly yanks) insist on labelling everything with in order to brand it, sell it and franchise it.

Alt. rock is an umbrella term, it was originally used to describe American bands in the 1990s. Like all the grunge bands for example. Alt. rock and indie rock don’t really mean a whole lot aside from describing eras.

I’m pretty sure he was joking, I mean it’s far too easy to come back from a statement like that and Talons knows it.

"They stopped being alt. rock with The Bends. All their releases afterward are basically art/experimental rock and electronic."
"IMO art rock is just rock minus basically any blues influences"
y'all are both right but tbh "alt rock" & "art rock" are usually just about as meaningless as each other, despite both being tags often associated with some of my favorite bands. often just seems to mean "stuff that isn't classic rock or metal," tho i suppose that in itself is a useful enough indicator. at the end of the day your local record shop is probably just gonna file most things under "pop/rock" anyway so let Rolling Stone or whoever figure it out :D

God I forgot about this band and album somehow. Such a classic.
