The prog parts in The Message sound like Eloy. Makes me think of the intro of Incarnation of Logos. Cool album, will need to listen more. I did not dig Hidden History when it came out, time to give these guys another chance

This feels akin to Bad Religion's Into the Unknown for me, in the sense that despite the obvious talent on display, I can't help but be put off by how far it deviates from the stuff that I liked these peeps for. At least it still has some neat shreddage hidden in there to keep me content, but that just makes all the overtly proggy wankery stand out even more.
Oh well, maybe it's just a grower.

"If anything, Owls was more zeitgeisty than people realized at the time. Everyone and their mother loved that album, and now that they're over it (and after the meh follow-up), they're calling the band overrated. Rivers of Nihil had their moment and got to tour extensively off of that album's success, but they were never big enough to warrant being labeled "most overrated"."
Yeah this is pretty apt. THey also never really gelled their sound at any point I feel like, they went from a middling if kind of cool dm debut and then Majesty was like pretty middling kind of cool nothing rly special tech death and then Owls was like a good album if you're not bothered by sax guy prog bullshit and then The Work was very just like chuggy and middling and had its moments i feel like largely due to the harsh vocal delivery but that guy is gone and now they're doing even weirder different shit with Andy from BCI whom I do enjoy but it's hard to care anymore.

BCI is great and I'm so glad they're active again

Just back from my local record store (little place known for classic rock and heavy metal) and the dude working was putting this on to play in the store and we talked about it for 5 mins. Good times

I have a really strict policy of not buying records if I cannot read the name of the band on the album cover, or giving 5 out of 5. However, this album has completely blown me away and is clearly the album of the year for me. There is a perfect blend of death metal and kosmic / space rock, with neither sounding out of place. Just outstanding and given that it seems to have sold out everywhere on vinyl, incredibly lucky to get a copy.

I’m glad you like the album but that sounds like kind of a dumb policy
