"I mourn for your student loans
Bringing up your music degree in a conversation about something that you
then argue is subjective is low key hilarious. But again, ShapeOfJizzToCum, I do not care that you like this. Have at it. Just can’t believe that we are again retreading the “this has lots of plays so it’s good” argument."
Lmao okay I haven't come back to this thread since I posted that because I knew it was cringe and I regretted it immediately BUT the whole point I was trying to make was that it doesn't give me any kind of leg up any more than anyone else to be able to say what is allowed and/or works in music as far as genre mashing/overall sound.
I'd never argue that popular=good but obviously the subjectivity of what is good will just lead to arguing in circles for all time, but I think if you're specifically speaking to what "works" and there is already a pretty massive established fan base that thinks it sounds good, it's asinine to try to argue that it doesn't.
I recently heard Motionless in White for the first time and for me it was one of the most dogshit things that's ever touched my ears, I'd rather listen to my own ass cheeks slapping together.
But for me to argue that what they're doing doesn't work or they should be doing something else would be dumb as hell, because I've seen how many people think they're the greatest thing to happen to music and know amount of how much I know it's dogshit will make them less valid.
As much as it pains me.

"Just getting into these guys and it’s pretty cool shit. It’s as if the weeknd and Billie eilish started a metal band and got Lewis capaldi to do vocals. Epic."
Capaldi's vocals are like the death of music, so I wouldn't consider that a plus

That person gotta be like 14, you gotta let their baby ears fall off and new ones grow in or they just gonna keep saying nonsense.

Never heard of Lewis Capaldi but if he sounds like this maybe he's worth a shot idk

I can assure you he doesn't sound like this. Every time he sings in his higher register, he sounds like he's in utter agony on the toilet. So I'm not sure where the comparison even came from
If you've heard him from anything, it would be Somebody You Loved. That song was absolutely everywhere when it came out

skimmed through that song again and - Lewis would sound a hell of a lot better if he wasn't trying to force a "lower" sounding voice if you will. Like, take the chorus and give it more of like, say, a Kellin Quinn delivery and you've got a winner imo.

I can see what you mean. Really the only reason I said his voice was awful is because of those higher parts - which he unfortunately does a lot of. But I heard a live version of Somebody You Loved where he sang in a lower key, and it wasn't as bad

Yeah the biggest issue is how he's going higher but seems to want to still sound "deep". Lighten the timbre a little bit when you're going that high imo. Even Vessel knows how to do that.

What a great, challenging album. After the rather disappointing TPWBYT, I had hoped ST would push their sound further in every direction and they did not disappoint. I naturally gravitated towards the heavier songs on here (namely, "Vore" and the title track), but was pleasantly surprised by the R&B-influenced parts as well. If anything, I appreciate the ambition and the creative, varied songwriting on offer here. I am beyond excited to see what comes next.

Dropped to a 2.5. The more I listen, the more I realise they're just a Lo-fi Issues... Not sure where everyone's hearing all this "genre bending", it's not like this hasn't been done before.
The Summoning and Vore are pretty great tunes though.

I'm 20 pages behind in comments but I just woke up with "Slam Smith" in my head and I believe it encompasses this shirtbird succinctly.

I think this would be a less engaging thread if all of us expected nothing and got nothing in return. Well, some of us clearly expected nothing. I did have high hopes from the singles though, and my sheer disappointment alone is what keeps me coming back to this goldmine. Giving me ~ Late 00's Sputnik Review Thread vibes ~. We have to beat the other review though, it's at 30 pages.
