DAMN can't hold a candle to this, predicting a rating spike somewhere in the future for this

Kendrick has always been wildly commercial tbh, he just also has a lot of substance behind his music

"a good testament to that is how infrequently you hear Humble/DNA/Element these days despite how overwhelmingly everywhere they were when damn released, everyone forgot"

lol what i hear humble and dna and pride and love and element and loyalty in public and ads all the time still lol... literally cannot watch an nfl or nba game without hearing one of those songs being played in the stadium. even moreso if you include the black panther songs

GKMC was absolutely huge in 2012. couldn’t go to a party in grade 9 without hearing Mad City, BDKMV or Swimming Pools

is it me or is this album nowhere near as present on year end lists as you would think? or at the very least much lower in lists than you'd expect?

“Nah I'm actually surprised to see it on some year-end lists.” yeah I thought I was a Kendrick stan before this and nowadays I can’t even name half the songs off this album

You guys have a point, Kendrick’s always been popular. But GKMC got popular because people just dug it a lot, it cultivated a lot of its hype just through the strength of the album. DAMN was popular because of fever-pitch internet hype coming from TPAB, a LOT of marketing, and more pop-centric song writing clearly designed for mass entertainment. It was not the direction I wanted him to take after TPAB.

gkmc does not have hits because people just liked the record. it’s filled with commercial attempts. swimming pools and bdkmv especially. money trees, hell DRAKE IS ON THE ALBUM lmfao

Ok it’s not JUST that, my bad. s80 was mildly popular itself which gave Kendrick the opportunity to work with high profile artists like Drake and Dre

But you are tripping balls if you don’t think DAMN is the way worse culprit of being commercial schlock
