So the timing was also a major contributor as I caught this shortly after release and got swept into the hype. I also think the album’s track listing is easy to digest as it’s basically 3 sets of 2 songs each, and it starting sinking in pretty quickly. I love the flow of the opener, feels like an onward march on the long road north.

I really like how they use horn instruments in this. There are moments on the record where I get really swept into it but they always sort of stop prematurely for me—the moments, that is. Still not really feeling this as much as i would like. But, giving it time

Who am I kidding? Title track is a 5 as well.
I'm a little surprised at the lower ratings for this one compared to some of their other works. I can only assume that most of you diehards are rating this against their classics which is more than fair.
But as a stand alone album, this is greater than a 3.9. This fucking thing is awesome - I'm hooked, just kicking myself I didn't get on the train sooner.

barely anything modern extreme has the popular consensus to breech =>4.1 so in that respect 3.9 is pretty dang good. Make of the .1 what you will but that margin of 'but' seems fair from comments

Yeah, admittedly that’s what I’m doing. I do like a little differentiation within a single discography. Probably unfair idk 🤷🏻
This, the s/t, The Raging River & the collab with Julie are my 3.5s

A lot of this album is beyond stellar but then tracks like Into the Night (0/5) exist and rip you out of the experience

That's how I feel about 30% of the runtime on Vertikal. But the other 70% crushes so hard.

Into the Night is weak shit agreed. One of their weakest "softer" tunes, pales in comparison to something like Crossing Over or And With Her Came The Birds

Into the night serves it's purpose, this is still solid from start to finish

It's close to a 5. It's not quite SATH level though so I can't do it.

dare I say i'm liking these guys as much as ISIS?
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
these guys have a greater quantity of top notch material ( /simply more material in general), even if ISIS's peaks are comparable. That's essentially how I'd view it.
|
| |
used to prefer these guys to ISIS, but they haven't held up nearly as well over time. too much emphasis on heft, not as much talent or versatility for atmosphere. they have more good material, though not proportionately, and also more muchness
