I couldn't help but chuckle reading this review yesterday, assuming that the stream of near instant 5s was nothing but typcial Deftones hyperbole. I was also relatively unimpressed by the self-titled track upon release, so I was more or less expecting another Gore (which wasn't bad, but was quite average in relation to KNY and DE). My skepticsm was certainly shattered. This album is the perfect balance of the metal, shoegaze, and dream pop sounds that they have been swimming in since White Pony, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Frank Delgado's synth/sampling work is on the front end of the mix on many of these songs too, giving a darker atmosphere that reminds me a bit of mid-to-late 80s Depeche Mode. There's also not a weak track on here, which I can't say about any other Deftones album. It's basically the album that I have been wanting to hear since Saturday Night Wrist, and easily surpasses it and White Pony for me, given that both albums have have songs that I have never been too crazy about. Not sure about a 5 yet, but it is definitely their most consistent, polished, and most passionate album so far. The self-titled track also sounds much better within the context of the album as a whole, right after Headless.

the first listen of a record as hype as this one was for me always goes like “is this as good as I hoped?” for the full run time

Yeah I don't understand how anyone can call this predictable. The band has definitely stepped up their musical game on this record, even outshining Chino at some moments.

the t/t is better on the record because it’s the catchiest chino and this album doesn’t have a *ton* of super catchy moments from him (to me) so it’s definitely welcome

Am I the only one slightly underwhelmed? Better than Gore but less than Diamond eyes and Koi.

Yup, and it works WAY better with the whole album behind it.

Seems I'm already a little late to the party but uhhh yeah this album is really something. Maybe their moodiest work since the 90s? And definitely less hooks than you'd expect. I hear bits and pieces of all their records scattered throughout, and something new also. The serious improvement in production over Gore is a big plus.
Can't say I'm totally blown away immediately, but it does seem like the kind of album to reward repeat listening

Definitely the best Chino album by any stretch of the imagination. It's shocking how great he sounds here.
