I'd say this is pretty accessible, as far as death metal goes. relatively clean production, catchy riffs, sweet melodies here and there, but it's still heavy as balls

I think what gives the idea of certain DM being accessible is songwriting, they feel coherent and sections linked together well.
That is why I could never get behind Immolation (except Majesty and Decay), they don't have songwriting imo, just a series of very metal riffs. I know metal fans here love them but I do not.
Anyway, Blood Incantation seems to understand this idea of making heavy sections actually part of a larger song.

[2] to everything you just said, including Majesty and Decay

idk why but that album is the one that stuck with me. It does sound quite massive.
It's why I can no longer really get behind much of the modern technical DM stuff, incredible musicians but they know nothing of writing songs.
Even the OSDM stuff I enjoy is full of pointless murk and chugging that goes nowhere.
That's why I was so surprised by the new Coffin Rot. Shit is so well-written.

Yes, spawn of possession is a great example of boring technical wankery

Hate Eternal is another that does nothing for me.

hate eternal is just standard dm

It's defs more in that sort of riff-salad stuff that Immolation also plays.
And whenever I hear songs form them there will be a cool ass riff but it's never played for more than like 10 seconds or something

"hate eternal is just standard DM"
true, but I did see them live touring on King of Kings, and it left an impact. Erik Rutan is a monolith of a human, and all 3 of the guitarists (including bass), stood above these massive fans the entire time with their hair blasting up in the air to constant strobe lights that illuminated their skeletal silhouettes. It was truly epic. but yeah on a record they are whatever.

Hate Eternal sound very modern to my ears. Even tho they have been around since like 98 or something their release from 99 sounded way ahead of its time.
Too bad they never went anywhere other than that sort of techy stuff with massive production.

Don't get me wrong, I like them, but I won't rate their best stuff above a 4

Also, Incantation sound like what I would call standard DM.
They also rule.

imo no

gorguts dont have enough riffs

Incantation sticks closer to trad DM with breakdowns and slow sinister sections whereas Hate Eternal and Immolation are much more modern and techy.
Most of the OSDM bands take more from Incantation instead of HE which were massively influential to the newer tech-death guys
