Weird, and poppy, and thrashy.... Exactly what I'm looking for in a HevyDevy album.

New album is awesome! I’m REALLY enjoying Nightwork, especially since we get finished versions of a lot of quarantine songs (Factions, Stampys Blaster, Precious Sardine, Sober). Also prefer Children of Dog over God, but Devy is always a grower so I’m sure I’ll love it all in due time. Still sad people didn’t warm up to The Puzzle

Listening to the bonus album 'Tests of Manhood' rn for the first time. It's so much better than I expected I'm scratching my head in disbelief. Devin throwing out bonus CD's of superior album quality like it's everyday's business. Genius.

"TIL Chad Kroeger is doing death growls on Hear Me"

He's doing the backup vocals in the chorus, and when you know that and hear it again, you can absolutely tell its him as he has that country twang even back there. The story of how he ended up on the record is fascinating and really made me appreciate both him and Nickelback just a bit.

i gave it a listen yesterday. its a LOT to absorb. i need to listen to it more ofc but i will say on first impression - it was more impressive and cohesive than i thought it'd be. seeing most of the commentary around is saying its pretty messy despite the amount of passion gone into it. it def feels like an opera album first with metal instrumentation spinkled on top, which isnt really my jam, but it deserves more than a couple days to digest

what did you think of it Lucca?

I’m only two listens in so far, and you’re right about it being a LOT aha, so I likewise feel like I haven’t fully absorbed it yet. I will say, that on first couple listens I prefer Empath just because that album is a midlife crisis as well, but it has tangible songs I can point to and want to revisit - this just feels like a 70-80 min song which is cool, it’s just harder to pinpoint songs I want to revisit at least as of now.

But my wife is away today so I’m making it my project to jam this over and over again and catch up on some reading so I’ll prob have a better idea towards the end of the day.

But it’s def my favorite thing he’s done since empath (which I guess isn’t saying much, the only thing it had to outdo is Lightwork cause everything else was lame)

100%. Empath is the perfect balance and approach to the orchestral stuff for me. Hard to dissect The Moth as its clearly 1 long piece, or at the least several acts. More ambitious but probs wont be something I find myself returning to as much

The guys been on a decline with every release over the last decade, which is pretty fine given his age and stage in career. At least its not phoned in like Powernerd.

Yeah powernerd was incredibly mid

And I agree, but their golden era basically lasted from ocean machine to empath imo with just a handful of albums that didn’t work in between (I love all of the Devin Townsend project albums, casualties of cool, all their earlier terria/infinity/accelerated evolution stuff) so it’s totally acceptable for them to dip about now, agree

And yeah I’ll let you know if anything major clicks today but even though I think this is great, I agree I’m prob not gonna revisit this much in the long run just because it’s such a fucking commitment to get through

But still the fact that this dude is doing massive projects like this at this point in his career is insane
