Finally taking y'all's recommendations and giving it a spin. Just got through Wester Vespertine, and gotta say I would never have expected a new CoF to be this good. The last album I listened to was Midian when that came out, and everything I've dabbled in since sounded bland and uninspired, but there are moments on this where songwriting-wise I feel that same magic that the early stuff had.

100% agreed, I was skeptical about that at first too but it totally lives up to the hype. Amazing record, as is Hammer.

I think Hammer slightly edges this out, but they are both classic tier for me

sounds like I have some more listening to do then! Just jumped ahead to Night at Catafalque Manor, cause I saw someone say that was a killer track, and just wow.

I envy you DBoy, you've got some crazy coolness to discover!

I too think Hammer might even be slightly better.

There are subtle hints to their mid-era catchy gothy-ness on this album which to me was kind of lacking on hammer of the witches (also among their greatest albums, agreed hard). I feel like this one is slightly better and pretty much the perfect cof album

I said back in October I needed to revisit this. Still haven't.

That's gonna change tonight.

I think this one has a bit too much fat, but tbh, it and hammer are pretty neck and neck.

Hammer is more consistent but this has some of their best cuts ever, so it kinda evens itself out.

Like seriously, Wester Vespertine is probably my fave COF song ever. It has everything m/

Also these riffs and leads in Achingly Beautiful. Whole album is filled to the brim with super addicting and fun guitar playing, a reinvigorated Dani, tonnes of energy and general awesomeness.

He is an amazing lyricist. And his dual-tone screams are fantastic.

Yeah agreed. Love his vocal style too obviously, it's very unique. No-one really does it like him.

I’m almost inclined to believe you, but Allender and Pyres might be favorite. Shaw and Ashok are definitely their most talented duo, but there’s something really magical about the guitars on Midian imo. Marthus is definitely their best drummer tho.

It's absolutely on par for me with the Midian and Cruelty lineups. Amazing stuff.

Shaw is such an incredible player and a true inspiration with his live performance. Man is a monster on stage.
