That was like a second thought. Not to be taken the way it was. But yeah Science Fiction was an album for the ages. I think it’s better but this and Slowdive are still my 5’s for the year.

Empire line for most forgettable national song

This statement is false because clearly you have truly forgotten their debut and hence that actually contains the most forgetttable National songs.

This album is so great, Im so freakin glad they started experimenting more

As much as I love TWFM, I was worried they would just keep doing super slow piano ballads over and over

at the end of the day it's a pretty nice album, nothing new for the national, and it doesn't need to be

eventually it might be cool for them to stretch their actual songwriting towards something experimental but if that never happens, the discog is already pretty wonderful

And TWFM had 3 "super slow piano ballads" as well. 4 if you count Slipped, the guitar is very up front.

The title track and Walk it Back are pretty different for the band, how experimental can they go?

Approximate the sound of Cradle of Filth circa 1995? C'mon people

I think the EL VY album showed there's only so chipper and funky Matt can convincingly stray towards. Not sure how they could majorly shake up the song writing and still play to Berninger's strengths.

Most likely if you asked for a whole album of change you'd end up with twelve 'Turtlehead's in a row
