"Making music to chart is honestly a bit sad though."

It really depends though, most of the time if you want to make "fun" music it associates with the fact of getting into the charts, I can't stop loving disco-era Bee Gees or ABBA tbh

there is no one way to tell if something is indie/alt compared to not. but the easiest way to tell are production choices.
alt rock has more spacey, reverb heavy production, indie rock is more barebones. similarly, contemporary pop has much heavier and dense production (yet somehow "clearer) than indie. even when the songs themselves seem "minimalist", it's still there. how the vocals are produced are often a dead giveaway as well. note that these themselves are not completely reliable in themselves, but is still very very useful to know.
secondly are instrumental choices. that one is more obviously felt but is less consistent in distinguishing between alt/indie, etc. this can include various guitar tones, drum patterns, etc. etc.

That's a good way to explain it.

Nothing wrong with making fun music, but when its sole purpose is to chart it seems a little manufactured.
or these people have a livelihood that they want to uphold or a dream they want to fulfill. certain jobs demand certain things, many people have different moral or life believes than you or any other "pretentious" music fan.

'indie pop reaches into electropop, synthpop, chamber pop, dream pop, twee pop, indie rock, art pop, indietronic, indie folk, jangle pop, power pop, psych pop, neo-psych, and so forth.'

This site makes way too much of arbitrary genre classifications based on minute differences in sound/approach, I'd imagine there are songs out there that could be classified by twenty or more genres depending on who you talk to.

Genre categorisation should never be used as ammunition in arguments here, 99% of the time they carry no weight. It's like watching people play musical top trump cards.

I like these horribly specific genres to find similar music. Anyone who tries to use a genre tag as an argument is just dumb

if anything, this site doesn't make enough. most of these genres are not accessible in this site.
hell, the site has only one fuckin tag for hip-hop. and USED to have only one for electronic. pretty shameful tbh. and those subgenres aren't even all that specific imo. as each of them have numerous and numerous waves within them.

until recently the site didn't even have a tag for techno

also thanks to a lack of a 'garage rock' tag people have been tagging The White Stripes and Stooges as 'garage'

Genre classifications are a useful enough indicator for finding similar music but beyond that I think using them for reflected elitist kudos or to win arguments is self defeating, cos its ridiculous

copyright isn't updated, whenever you try to add a new album to the database the default year is still 2014... when was the last major site update? When you get the nice dropdown menu when you hit "browse genres"?

The last major update was the fix of the lists on the first months of this year, it was a quite decent update since the lists worked like shit but besides that Spunik hasn't seen anything new since I've been around and I've been around since 2012
