This album is absolutely amazing. Anyone have any recc's for bands that are this creative and appealing? I've been looking for weeks but can't find anyone close to these guys.

There is no band quite like them, really. Have your heard their 2011 album? I don't see it rated.

Makes sense, that's probably what makes them so special!

DSS? I've heard it but I haven't soaked it in enough yet to actually rate it! To be honest, I prematurely rated everything that isn't Arche, Uro, and Gauze. I've heard them all but I think I need to give each one a good day or two's worth of listening before I can accurately depict how I feel about them since they cover so much music.

In terms of similar bands, ones which are remotely similar are just saccharine version of them so not worth your time. You're taking the right approach really, especially with DSS because oh boy that's their most daunting one (also don't forget the Unraveling limited edition EP with Macabre). Once you've finished with most of their discography, I highly recommend their live DVD/Blu Rays.

To be fair, dss is the most rewarding album of all time.

Seconding the Unraveling EP with "Macabre" (the remake is one of their best compositions).

For the order, well, I've already shared my opinion on that in a list.

Word. I can't get behind the production on DDS for some reason, maybe I just need to get used to it and I'm trying.

Of the three I know really well

Arche >=< Uro > Gauze. I think Uro has more interesting parts but Arche is SO tight. That being said, Uro is probably my favorite metal album and I may have just over listened to it. Is Macabre that bad?

EDIT: That's a lie ~ DDS's production is fine. I just enjoyed Hageshisha's single more than the album version.

2/3rd most rewarding album for me, definitely needs time. I hated it for ages.

Evo, I'm going to check your list out in a moment. Thanks for the input Infinity! I definitely won't be looking for other bands like them then. Actually, in my mind the band they share a lot with (at least in terms of mentality and approach) is Deftones.

There's a lot more of their early J influence on arche, which is why I think it's the weakest of the latest three. I love the bleak, dank vibes on dad and I love the mysterious progressive vibe on uro

Macabre is great, but it's such a frustrating album for me because it has many neat ideas brought down by the overall package.

I can't stand Hage's single version. Now...just listen to THIS version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcisHx89rFM

Ahhh, okay that makes sense and is probably why I love Arche. I'm super into a lot of J rock (Brian the Sun, Ling Tosite Sigure, Maximum the Hormone, etc) and some of that came through here and I adored it. Listening to DSS as we speak ~ I'm loving how ominous this intro is. I honestly don't remember this album well enough ~ I'm glad I haven't rated it yet haha.

I'll definitely look into that!

And the live version of Hageshisha is the BEST version. I've also seen Arche live and damn this thing is a beaut.

Macabre is unfortunately...that bad :[

Shame because on Blitz 5 Days they finally did justice to the album.

No, it's not, but songs from it sound better live, especially Myaku which I really don't like on studio version.

Yeah the whole thing is superb. Almost all of Dir's songs have the best version of it live.

Beelzebub = Best Dir track ever
